Get ready for a behind-the-scenes look at the unsung heroes who brought Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights to life!
The Secret Stars of the Silver Screen
Wuthering Heights, Fennell's adaptation of Emily Brontë's classic, sparked intense debates among audiences and critics alike. From reviews to social media, everyone had an opinion, especially about that one intimate scene with Heathcliff's scarred back, which became a viral sensation.
But here's where it gets controversial: the back you saw on-screen might not have belonged to the actor you thought it did. BBC Newsbeat delved into the world of body doubles, those unsung heroes who stepped in to ensure the film's success.
The Unsung Heroes of Wuthering Heights
Imagine being asked, "Do you have a hairy back?" during a job interview. That's exactly what happened to Bo Ponomari, a Ukrainian actor and body double who worked on Wuthering Heights. Despite being nine inches shorter than the tall star, Jacob Elordi, Ponomari's physique was deemed similar enough to step in as his stand-in.
Ponomari spent an hour in makeup, applying prosthetic scars to his back, and recalls director Fennell's meticulous attention to detail, ensuring they matched Elordi's. On set, Ponomari's role involved testing camera angles, lighting, and providing alternative shots when Elordi was busy.
But the big question remains: whose back did we see on-screen? Ponomari confesses he doesn't know, explaining that the final product is often a mix, with scenes featuring the main actor, stunt performers, or body doubles.
The Art of Body Doubling
Ponomari reveals that big film productions are divided into first and second units. The first unit focuses on important scenes with the actor, while the second unit handles stunts and scenes that don't require the actor's presence. This is where body doubles, hand doubles, and back doubles come into play, ensuring the film stays on schedule and within budget.
But body doubles are also used when actors can't or don't want to do a scene for personal or religious reasons. Ponomari explains, "You have a division of people, actors, and doubles that are willing to do that."
And get this: Ponomari's role might not even be the most surprising one on the set! Meet Lucy London, a 25-year-old who doubled for a 14-year-old during filming. Due to strict rules on child actors' working hours and her petite stature, London often stands in for younger actors.
In Wuthering Heights, she played the young Cathy, originally portrayed by teenager Charlotte Mellington. London describes stepping into a child's shoes as liberating, saying, "As adults, we overthink... But children don't really do that. It's a lot of fun."
Stunt Performers: The Risk-Takers
Stunt performers like Nikita Mitchell often take on the dangerous moments where lead actors could get hurt. But, as Mitchell explains, it's not just about the big, on-camera set pieces. She acted as a stand-in for Margot Robbie, having worked with her on Barbie in 2023.
Mitchell spent weeks training with Robbie to mimic her movements perfectly on camera. She describes the Australian actress as "quite brave" about doing her own stunts, even revealing that Robbie's brother is a stunt performer back home.
Mitchell stepped in during some of Wuthering Heights' dicier scenes, including when Cathy is on the edge of a cliff and when she's thrown into a tree by Heathcliff. She tested the harness and wires beforehand and ensured Robbie's safety during those intense moments.
But Mitchell also took a literal fall for Robbie, tumbling from a wall when Cathy is spotted scoping out the grounds of a mansion. Mitchell says the 8-10ft fall was no big deal compared to the 150ft cliff drops she's tackled in the past.
While it can be disappointing when audiences never see a scene you've worked on, Mitchell agrees it's all part of the game. And regardless of whether they make the final cut, stunt actors and body doubles are compensated for their time and dedication.
So, the next time you watch a film, remember the unsung heroes who made it all possible!
