The Outsiders: A Broadway Success Story
The Outsiders, a Tony-winning stage musical adaptation of S.E. Hinton's beloved coming-of-age novel and Francis Ford Coppola's film version, has achieved a remarkable feat: recouping its $22 million capitalization. This is an increasingly rare accomplishment for new Broadway musicals, and it's a testament to the show's enduring appeal and strong audience support.
The recoupment was reached during the week ending December 28, 2025, and was announced by the producers, Matthew Rego, Michael Rego, and Hank Unger of The Araca Group. They expressed their excitement and gratitude for the audience's embrace and support of the show.
"We're thrilled by how audiences have embraced and supported The Outsiders," they said. "It's been a true honor to bring Susie Hinton's beloved book to life on stage for those who are new to this story and those who have cherished it for almost 60 years."
The Outsiders made its Broadway debut on April 11, 2024, at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, following a successful world premiere engagement at La Jolla Playhouse in March 2023. The production's success was further solidified when it won four 2024 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical (Danya Taymor), Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Hana S. Kim and Brian MacDevitt), and Best Sound Design of a Musical (Cody Spencer).
To date, The Outsiders has played 746 performances, captivating over 770,000 audience members from all 50 states and over 75 countries. The production has broken its own house record 10 times and became the first show in the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre's history to surpass a gross of $2 million in a single week.
The musical's success extends beyond Broadway. The North American tour officially opened in October 2025 at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the setting of the story. The tour is now playing across the US and Canada, and future productions are planned for London's West End, Asia, and Australia, with more details to be announced.
The Outsiders features a book by Adam Rapp with Justin Levine, music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay & Zach Chance) and Justin Levine. This achievement comes at a time when the Broadway landscape is facing financial challenges, with recent high-profile closures of musicals like The Queen of Versailles, Hell's Kitchen, Cabaret, and Gypsy, among others, without recoupment.
Despite these challenges, The Outsiders' success story highlights the power of a compelling story and the dedication of its creators and audience. It serves as an inspiration for other Broadway productions, demonstrating that with the right elements, a show can not only recoup its investment but also leave a lasting impact on audiences worldwide.
