The Tommy John Surgery Saga: A Tale of Opportunity Lost and Found
In a recent development that has shaken the baseball world, Pierson Ohl, the promising right-hander acquired by the Rockies from the Twins, has been dealt a significant setback. Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports that Ohl has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament, an injury that will require Tommy John surgery and sideline him for the entire 2026 season.
Ohl, a 26-year-old with a bright future, made his major league debut with the Minnesota Twins in 2025. While his earned run average of 5.10 in 30 innings may not have been stellar, his performance in the minors was exceptional. With a 2.40 ERA, a strikeout rate of 30.3%, and a walk rate of just 3.9% over 71 1/3 innings, Ohl showcased his potential.
Despite not being a hard thrower, averaging only 91.9 mph with his four-seamer, Ohl's changeup and command were highly praised. FanGraphs' Eric Longenhagen rated his changeup as a plus pitch (60 on the 20-80 scale) and his command as potential plus-plus (70), indicating a bright future ahead.
But here's where it gets controversial... Ohl had a clear path to a spot in the Colorado Rockies' bullpen. While veterans like Victor Vodnik, Seth Halvorsen, Juan Mejia, Jimmy Herget, Brennan Bernardino, and Antonio Senzatela are likely to secure their places, there were openings for newcomers. However, Ohl's injury has dashed those hopes for the upcoming season.
And this is the part most people miss... There's a silver lining for Ohl. By being placed on the 60-day Injured List (IL), he will remain on the major league roster for the entire season, earning him a year of big league service and the corresponding big league pay. The $780K major league minimum is a significant upgrade from the $100K bonus he received when he was drafted in the 14th round out of Grand Canyon University in 2021.
Even with the injury, Ohl's future with the Rockies looks promising. He will still accrue a full year of service time on the 60-day IL, and with just 62 days of MLB service before the injury, he will remain under the club's control for at least another five seasons. Ohl, along with former top infield prospect Edouard Julien, was traded to Colorado in exchange for pitching prospect Jace Kaminska, giving the Rockies a potential long-term solution.
