Is your EV battery's lifespan keeping you up at night? BYD is stepping up to ease those anxieties with a significantly extended battery warranty! Just weeks after making waves in Norway, the Chinese automaker is now rolling out a similar upgrade across Europe.
Specifically, BYD is boosting its battery warranty to a generous eight years or 250,000 kilometers (approximately 155,000 miles), whichever comes first. This isn't just for future buyers; existing BYD owners in Europe also benefit from this enhanced coverage. That's right, if you already own a BYD, you're automatically included!
Previously, the kilometer limit was capped at 200,000 km. This 50,000 km increase primarily benefits those who clock serious miles, allowing them to drive with greater peace of mind. To put it in perspective, hitting the 250,000 km mark within eight years means averaging about 31,250 kilometers (roughly 19,400 miles) annually.
This extended warranty applies to all of BYD's battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), with one exception: the eTP3 electric van, mirroring the policy already in place in Norway. It's crucial to differentiate this battery warranty from BYD's other coverage plans. Don't confuse it with the standard vehicle warranty (six years or 150,000 km, which remains unchanged), the twelve-year unlimited-kilometer anti-rust warranty, or the electric drivetrain warranty (eight years or 150,000 km). Keeping those separate is key to understanding your coverage.
Now, here's where it gets interesting... While most EV drivers won't likely hit 250,000 kilometers within eight years, this warranty extension is a powerful statement of confidence from BYD. It demonstrates their belief in the longevity and durability of their batteries. But is it really necessary for the average driver, or is it more of a marketing tactic? That's something to consider.
And this is the part most people miss... The warranty also guarantees a minimum "State of Health" (SOH) of 70% for the battery. This means that if your battery capacity dips below 70% within the eight-year/250,000 km period, BYD is obligated to repair, replace, or otherwise rectify the issue. This is a significant safeguard, as battery degradation is a major concern for EV owners. Think of it as a promise that your car will still perform as expected, even after years of use.
According to BYD, "This mileage increase is designed to further strengthen user confidence in New Energy Vehicles – and it will apply to not only new cars but also all existing BYD models. So existing European owners with a BYD EV or Super Hybrid will automatically benefit from the expanded coverage.” The enhanced warranty is valid in the countries of the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
This move by BYD to extend the battery warranty raises some questions. Is this a sign that BYD batteries are inherently more durable than the competition? Or is it a strategic move to gain a competitive edge in the rapidly growing European EV market? What do you think? Does this extended warranty make you more likely to consider a BYD vehicle?
