In recent times, employers have been overwhelmed by a surge in job applications, largely due to the increasing use of AI by job seekers. This has led to a warning for applicants: relying too heavily on AI might actually work against you.

Zoe Sullivan, the head of people and culture at Co-Op Group, has noticed a significant increase in applications, particularly for white-collar roles. She explains that while some applicants use AI to enhance their CVs, many others misuse it to present themselves falsely. This has made the recruitment process more challenging and time-consuming for recruiters.

Joel Delmaire, from AI recruitment firm JobAdder, confirms a 42% increase in job applications over the past year. He identifies two distinct behaviors among candidates: the "machine gun application" approach, where candidates "spam" their resumes to numerous employers, and the more tailored, successful approach of using AI as a guide for jobs they're a good match for.

David Holland, from Employment Hero, agrees that AI has made it easier for candidates to apply, but it has also led to an increase in irrelevant applications. He warns that relying too much on AI to draft cover letters or optimize CVs can be counterproductive.

Dean Connelly, from recruitment agency Latte, emphasizes the importance of candidates being able to articulate their own views, even with AI-generated cover letters. Simply relying on AI can lead to automated rejection.

In response to the AI application surge, businesses are also adopting AI technology. Sarah McCann Bartlett, from the Australian HR Institute, explains that businesses are using AI to sift through the high volume of applications, making the screening process more efficient.

Companies like Zip and McKinsey are actively encouraging the use of AI in their recruitment processes, seeing it as a core skill for the future. Holland believes that most medium and large businesses in Australia are already adopting AI, with some exceptions in retail and hospitality.
